Bothasig 6th Side’s impressive league campaign showed no signs of slowing down as they cemented second place in the standings after playing their catch-up game against Edgemead on Wednesday.
The Green Machine had previously battled to a hard-fought point against cup finalists Bellville B at the PP Smit Stadium a fortnight ago, with a Lee Moody double helping the side to a 2-2 draw, after been 2-0 down, even after Ryan Gordon was sent off with 10 minutes remaining for letting the referee know exactly what he thought of his performance.
Last week, though, Winston Reynolds’ men got back to winning ways, although they made hard work it as they secured a 1-0 victory over their bitter rivals, who are one of the basement sides in the division and who will know they were lucky to have escaped a severe hiding at the Abe Sher Stadium.
To say the Sig were wasteful against the Mead would be a huge understatement, with numerous obvious goal-scoring opportunities ending with the technical area holding their heads in their hands, and the front men wishing the earth would open up and swallow them whole.
Despite the lackluster showing in the final third, Reynolds’ side looked simply sublime when in possession, pushing the ball around with consummate ease, and playing one-touch football like it was a Barcelona training session.
There would also be no denying the result, with Wayne Hendrickse’s corner somehow finding its way into the back of the net, despite the defender on the line getting his head to the ball, although the dubious goals panel are still out on a decision as to who should be awarded the goal.
The Green Giants were supposed to have taken to the field against Clyde Pinelands this past weekend, but the Sig’s monstrous reputation and hard-hitting reverse fixture left the southern suburb side crippled with fear and unable to make the trip Sig-side, despite their official statement stating they were only lacking a full squad.
That meant the points would automatically be handed to Bothasig, taking them to second, one point clear of Saxon Rovers, who they face in Maitland on Thursday evening, where they will have the chance to all but seal second place for the season.
